Xbox Toys With Reviving the Old Blades Dashboard
Xbox Labs got the Xbox 360's Blades interface running in a browser, and the CEO liked what she saw. A tweet isn't a dashboard update, though.
Microsoft got the old Xbox 360 Blades dashboard running again, in a browser, as a tech demo. That's the whole announcement. No release date, no console, no promise it ever leaves someone's laptop.
Scott Van Vliet, who runs the new Xbox Labs research group, posted footage of Blades alongside the 2008 NXE dashboard and the 2011 Metro dashboard, all resurrected and clickable on his PC, as shown in the clip he shared on X. He asked people which era they missed most and tagged Xbox CEO Asha Sharma directly. She bit, replying to ask whether people like the experiment, which tracks with Windows Central noting this isn't the first time she's floated Blades coming back since taking the job.
Meanwhile the actual Xbox 360 crowd hasn't been waiting on Microsoft at all. The channel Jacob R posted a video claiming Blades already works on every Xbox 360 right now through a community fix, no corporate research lab required.
That's the part that stings a little. Fans rebuilt the thing on fifteen-year-old hardware for free while Xbox Labs is still at the stage of showing a browser tab to its own boss and waiting for a reply. A customizable dashboard sounds great. So did the streaks system Xbox was testing a couple weeks back, and that one didn't need an ad slot carved into it to make financial sense.
Nostalgia is cheap to tweet and expensive to ship. Until Blades runs on an actual console I own, this is a demo reel, not a dashboard.
