Xbox Is Testing Dashboard 'Streaks,' and We Have Questions
Insider Gaming reports Xbox is piloting a new 'Streak' feature on the dashboard through its insider program, though no details on what it actually rewards have surfaced yet.

Streaks are the oldest trick in mobile game design, the little number that nags us to open an app we were not planning to open. Now, according to Insider Gaming, that trick is showing up somewhere we did not expect it: the Xbox dashboard itself, currently being tested through the console's insider program.
That is the entire shape of what has been reported so far. No word on what a streak actually tracks, no word on what breaking one costs us, no word on what keeping one earns. We are being asked to grade a feature we cannot see yet, and the honest answer is we cannot grade it at all. So we will grade the instinct behind it instead, and on a curve we are already suspicious of our own leniency for drawing.
Here is the thing about a streak counter bolted onto a dashboard: it measures how often we open the box, not what we found inside it when we did. A console we pay a monthly fee to access does not need a second reason to open it beyond the games sitting in the library. If the games are good, we open it anyway. If they are not, a flame icon counting consecutive logins is not going to make October feel less like a manageable gap in the calendar.
We have seen this shape before, usually on phones, usually attached to a currency we are nudged to spend before the streak resets. If that is where this is headed, a loyalty mechanic for a platform we already pay a subscription to access, that is a solution looking for a problem we did not report having. If instead it turns into something we actually asked for, a cleaner way to see which Game Pass titles we have not touched yet before they rotate out, that is a feature with an actual job.
We will hold the verdict exactly where an insider-program test belongs: unconfirmed, untested by anyone outside Microsoft's own beta pool, and a long way from a dashboard near us. The trust gets earned back the day a streak actually points at a game worth finishing, not at the act of opening the app that holds it.
