Switch Sports Resort's Best Event Uses Switch 2's Mouse Controls

Eurogamer spent an hour with Nintendo's upcoming sports collection and fell for the one event that asks you to sit down, not sweat: skateboarding, played with the Switch 2's much-maligned mouse controls.

Would you believe the best thing in a Nintendo sports game turned out to be the one event where nobody has to stand up? That is the confession Eurogamer made after an hour with Nintendo Switch Sports Resort at Gamescom, and it is a lovely little surprise: the skateboarding event ditches the flailing entirely and hands you the Switch 2's mouse controls instead, the same feature everyone shrugged at when it was announced.

That is the charm of this collection. It is not one flavor of motion-controlled chaos, it is a whole resort's worth of small activities, and some of them want you calm instead of sweaty. Nintendo Life's own hands-on, published the same day, walked the identical roster: a Prop Plane event, Table Tennis, Archery, Thumb Wrestling, Bowling, the newly desk-bound Skateboarding, and Boxing, with the team wistfully noting they missed Wave Race by the end. Two outlets, one Gamescom floor, the same pleasant surprise.

Here is the roster worth knowing before October 22, when the full collection arrives per our earlier coverage of the Nintendo Switch Sports Resort launch date:

  • Skateboarding trades big swings for small wrist movements on the mouse controls, and it is the quiet standout of the preview.
  • Table Tennis, Archery and Boxing keep the series' familiar energetic swinging intact.
  • Thumb Wrestling and Bowling round out the cozier end of the activity list.
  • Prop Plane appears early in the rotation, though neither outlet lingers on it.

Nintendo took its most unloved Switch 2 feature and built the tenderest little game around it, and somehow that is the one thing here I actually trust the company to have gotten right on purpose.
