Xbox Says It Needs This Gen Fixed Before Planning the Next

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma reportedly told staff the company has to shore up its current lineup before it can sell anyone on a next-gen 'family of devices.' Cart, meet horse.

Xbox's CEO wants you to know the next generation depends on fixing this one first. According to quotes from a company town hall meeting, reported by Asha Sharma and discussed on IGN's Next-Gen Console Watch, the plan is to strengthen the current lineup while also building toward what's internally called Project Helix and a so-called "family of devices" for the next generation.

Translation for anyone holding a controller right now: nothing changes today. The pitch is that Xbox can't sell a shiny future while the present one is still shaky, which is the kind of sentence that sounds like insight until you notice it's also just common sense dressed up in a quote. Of course a company should fix what it's selling before pitching what it isn't selling yet. The hosts, Daemon, Max, and Ryan, spend the episode asking whether a spread of devices for Xbox's tenth generation is actually a smart strategy or just a hedge dressed as vision, and that's the real question here.

Here's what I keep coming back to. Xbox has said versions of this before: steady the ship, then launch the big thing. The ship has taken a lot of steadying over the last few years. A town hall quote about priorities isn't a roadmap, a device, or a release date. It's a CEO telling employees the obvious thing out loud.

So call it progress if you want. I'll call it a sentence. Xbox gets to cash in the goodwill when the family of devices actually ships, not before, and until then this is a company talking about talking about the future.
