Xbox Is Reportedly Surveying Fans on Bringing Back Exclusives
Microsoft is said to be asking players whether Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, DOOM, and even Minecraft should go back to being Xbox console exclusives. Nothing is confirmed, but the question alone says a lot.
Microsoft is reportedly asking the people who still buy Xbox consoles whether it should start taking games away from everyone else again. According to Windows Central, a survey being circulated to players lays out a range of options, from timed exclusivity on specific titles all the way up to a scenario where nearly every major Xbox-owned franchise, including Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, DOOM, and Minecraft, stops showing up on PlayStation and Nintendo entirely. PC would reportedly still get everything. Consoles would not.
Nothing has been announced. That part matters, so say it plainly: this is a survey, not a policy, and a survey is Microsoft asking a question, not answering one. A screenshot tied to the story circulating on X adds to the picture but still amounts to the same thing, people looking at the same unconfirmed document and trying to read tea leaves.
Destin's channel picked the story up and framed the obvious tension in it: Microsoft spent the last several years putting Xbox games on PlayStation, on Switch, on phones, anywhere a controller could plug in, and built a whole pitch around Game Pass being the platform instead of the box. Now it is apparently asking whether to reverse that, at least for consoles. Destin's own read, laid out in the video, is that he is torn, and I get it. A survey like this does not get written unless somebody in Redmond thinks the current plan has not worked the way they hoped, and that is worth sitting with regardless of what they end up doing about it.
Here is what I actually think happens if Microsoft pulls that trigger. It does not magically make people buy a console they already decided not to buy. It just makes Fallout 5 or Elder Scrolls 6 a worse deal for the millions of people who bought those games on PlayStation and never owned an Xbox to begin with. That is not rebuilding a platform. That is punishing customers you already had for the sin of not having the one you wanted.
A survey tells you what Microsoft is thinking about. It tells you nothing about what it will actually ship. Companies run these all the time and quietly file the results under "interesting, never happening." Until there is an actual policy with an actual game attached to it, this is a focus group wearing a trench coat and calling itself news. Come back when there's a release date instead of a questionnaire.
