Xbox Says It Never Locked Down Exclusive GTA 6 Streaming
Xbox shot down reports that it quietly bought exclusive cloud streaming rights for GTA 6, and a company exec says PC players still won't be streaming it at launch.
Xbox wants you to know it did not buy the right to be the only place you can stream Grand Theft Auto 6. The denial comes after a report from The Verge claimed CEO Asha Sharma told staff in an all-hands meeting that Xbox planned something "no other platform holder is doing" with the game, which a chunk of the internet immediately translated into "Xbox owns GTA 6 streaming now."
Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball shut that down directly, telling press there's no exclusivity deal for cloud streaming the game at launch. As Rock Paper Shotgun points out, the distinction matters because streaming was the one plausible way PC players might have touched GTA 6 before a native PC version shows up, and that door just got closed back shut.
The story picked up legs fast. XBOX FRONTLINE devoted a stream to walking through where the rumor started and why cloud exclusivity on something this size was never realistic to begin with, and 3MG posted its own breakdown flatly calling the exclusivity claim false. Both landed on the same conclusion Xbox itself gave: whatever Sharma meant by doing something unprecedented, it wasn't locking the game behind xCloud.
What that unprecedented plan actually is, nobody's said. Could be a marketing push, could be some Game Pass tie-in, could be nothing you'd notice from the couch. Xbox has spent the last few launches promising ecosystem magic and delivering press releases, so forgive the shrug.
- The Verge's all-hands report sparked claims of exclusive GTA 6 cloud streaming rights for Xbox
- Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball denied any exclusivity deal
- PC players still won't get GTA 6 through Xbox cloud streaming at launch
- XBOX FRONTLINE and 3MG both corroborated the denial in their own breakdowns
Until Xbox says what it actually meant, treat the "no other platform holder is doing" line as marketing filler with a release date nowhere near it.
