Witcher 3 Remastered Gets a Real Patch, Switch 2 Still Waiting

CD Projekt Red finally let console players turn off that aggressive bloom lighting, while PC gets its own GPU fixes. Switch 2 owners are still staring at blur with no patch date.

CD Projekt Red pushed out a real patch for The Witcher 3 Remastered this week, and for once it actually changes something you can see on screen. Console players get new lighting options, including a bloom toggle, so you can finally turn down that hazy glow that made half of Velen look like it was shot through a dirty windshield. PC players got their own batch of fixes, mostly aimed at GPU-specific lighting problems, according to Rock Paper Shotgun's rundown of the update.

Here's the translation for anyone who just wants to load a save and play: bloom is the effect that makes bright light sources bleed and glow past their edges. It's supposed to look cinematic. On a lot of setups it just looked broken, washing out detail in sunlit fields and torchlit interiors alike. Giving players a switch to kill it isn't a technical miracle. It's the kind of basic option that probably should have shipped on day one. Better late than never, but let's not clap too hard for a slider.

What's actually fixed, and what isn't

The patch notes break down roughly like this, based on what's been reported:

  • Console versions gain adjustable lighting settings, bloom included, so the effect can be dialed back or switched off entirely
  • PC gets GPU-related lighting fixes tied to the same visual issues flagged on console
  • A separate patch is reportedly earmarked for Switch 2 specifically, aimed at the blurry visuals that version has been dragging since launch

That last point is the one worth sitting with. Switch 2 owners don't get this fix. They get a promise that a different fix is coming, with no date attached. This site already put the Switch 2 and Steam Deck versions side by side, and the blur wasn't subtle then either.

The handheld crowd is still doing CDPR's QA for free

Outside the official patch notes, players on Steam Deck have been running their own tests on update 5.0.1, checking frame rates in dense areas like Novigrad and comparing stock settings against upscaling tricks just to get a stable image. That's useful information, and it's also a sign of how much legwork is landing on enthusiasts instead of a changelog. The remaster already had a record-setting comeback on Steam last month, so there's no shortage of people willing to do that legwork.

A bloom toggle is a genuine improvement, and credit where it's due. But "earmarked" isn't a patch, it's a note on a to-do list. Switch 2 owners bought the same remaster everyone else did. Until that blur actually clears up on their screens, this is a fix for some of the people who paid for it, not all of them.
