Steam Frame OLED Spotted in Code, Still Vaporware

Two stray code branches with OLED lens specs have Reddit ready to cancel Steam Frame orders for a headset that may not exist for years, if ever.

Two git branches do not a product launch make, and that's before you get to the part where the chip powering them hasn't been announced yet either.

SteamFrameHub dug through the newly released Steam Frame kernel source and surfaced references to "deckard-oled" and "deckard-plano," Deckard being Valve's longstanding codename for the headset. One branch sat untouched since February, the other got edited within the last few weeks, which is the entire basis for a wave of Reddit posts asking whether to bail on existing reservations, as covered by PC Gamer. Rock Paper Shotgun pulled actual numbers out of the code: 3,552x3,840 resolution per eye, a 90Hz ceiling, specs that line up suspiciously well with the Micro-OLED panels Samsung already shipped in its Galaxy XR headset.

Here's the asterisk nobody on r/SteamFrame is reading past the headline for: that resolution bump still has to run on the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 the current Frame uses, according to VR analyst Brad Lynch, who flagged that the OLED branch pairs by default with Valve's unreleased hotswappable battery headstrap, because power draw at that pixel count apparently demands it. Lynch also points out the Galaxy XR throttles hard on a comparable chip even while streaming, and that a sharper display trades away field of view and motion clarity, the two things that actually matter for standalone VR play rather than 2D desktop streaming.

Valve's own engineers have already told PC Gamer, in comments from last year, that these branch names showing up in public code isn't some marketing drip campaign. Gabe Rowe called it somebody "fat fingering" a commit, and Josh Hudman said the team's reaction internally is usually just figuring out who leaked. Nobody at Valve is confirming a next display, a release window, or a chip to run it on.

So no, don't cancel your reservation over two code branches and a spec sheet lifted from somebody else's headset. The Frame that ships this quarter is a real, buyable object. The OLED one is a maybe, riding on a chipset Valve hasn't even announced, and "maybe" has never once beaten "shipping" in a release window.
