Thief: The Dark Project Remastered Arrives December 3
Nightdive, Eidos-Montréal, and Atari finally nailed down a launch date for the stealth classic's remake, and it's landing on everything you own.

Nightdive Studios, Eidos-Montréal, and Atari have set a real date on this one: December 3. Thief: The Dark Project Remastered is coming to PC, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation consoles, all at once, no staggered rollout, no console-exclusive window to wait out.
That matters because remasters of old stealth games have a habit of showing up on one platform first and everywhere else eventually. This isn't doing that. According to DayOne, the game hits Steam and the Xbox PC app the same day it hits consoles, and Xbox Series owners get Play Anywhere support, meaning one purchase covers both the console and the PC version. Switch owners get a free upgrade path to Switch 2 if they own one. Pre-orders are open now.
What you're actually getting
Strip away the announcement language and here's what it means for someone who just wants to sneak around in the dark again:
- One release date across every major platform, not a timed exclusive
- A single Xbox purchase works on both console and PC
- Switch owners aren't stuck on the weaker hardware if they upgrade to Switch 2
- Pre-orders are live ahead of the December 3 launch
That's a clean, modern release plan for a game whose original was built around candlelight, shadows, and guards who noticed if you walked too loud. Translating that tension to new hardware without wrecking the pacing is the actual test, and a press release doesn't tell you whether the shadows still work the way they used to.
The track record question
Nightdive has built a reputation on faithful, careful remasters of old PC classics, which is the only reason I'm not rolling my eyes at another stealth game getting a facelift. Eidos-Montréal and Atari backing it adds weight, at least on paper. None of that tells me whether sneaking past a guard patrol feels as good on a control pad as it did on a keyboard twenty-some years ago, and none of it tells me whether the Switch version holds up once you're not on the upgraded hardware.
December 3 isn't far off. When it lands, we'll know if the shadows are still worth hiding in, or if this is another classic that got a new coat of paint and nothing underneath it. Pre-order if you want, but I'm waiting for the reviews before I hand over money to find out which one it is.
