Leaked Mass Effect 5 Trailer Shows What EA Just Threw Away
A reportedly leaked Mass Effect 5 trailer is burning up Reddit, and it makes BioWare's shutdown sting even worse than the headline already did.

EA is down, and for once this isn't a PlayStation versus Xbox thing, it's just a publisher torching a studio and the game that studio was actually getting right.
A trailer claiming to be from the canceled Mass Effect 5, reportedly uploaded to Reddit and circulating widely since, shows a protagonist flirting with an Asari in a bar before the scene turns into an ambush and a full firefight against Krogan and Turian enemies. The clip reportedly opens with a disclaimer calling it in-engine footage from a small team using pre-production assets, language that suggests this was built for a reveal at N7 Day or The Game Awards and never made it there. Nobody at BioWare has verified it, and I'm treating it the way I treat every leak: real until EA says otherwise, unconfirmed until EA says anything at all.
A tone BioWare hadn't landed in years
What's reportedly striking about the footage isn't the gunfight, it's the mood. The last time BioWare opened a trailer with a bar scene, it was Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and that one came out quippy and cartoonish in a way a lot of longtime fans never forgave. This one, by every account of people who've watched it, plays dangerous and a little seductive, the kind of tone the Mass Effect trilogy built its reputation on and Andromeda never quite recaptured. If the footage is what it claims to be, it reads like a team that knew exactly what went wrong last time and was clawing its way back.
Here's my one honest concession, and it costs me nothing to admit because the loss is shared evenly: this wasn't going to be a PlayStation exclusive or an Xbox exclusive, so for once there's no scoreboard to needle anyone over. Every platform this game was heading to just lost it at the same time, and that's rare enough that I'm not going to pretend otherwise.
The part that actually hurts
So what does EA do with Mass Effect next? Nothing.
That's not a jab, it's the pattern. EA has a well-earned habit of sitting on dead franchises rather than letting someone else finish them, and a studio that no longer exists can't exactly negotiate a handoff. The trailer, if genuine, isn't a preview of a game we'll eventually play. It's a receipt for a game that was reportedly close to being good, shelved by a decision that had nothing to do with quality.
I'd still rather see Mass Effect go dark on a trailer this confident than limp out the door the way Veilguard did. That's cold comfort, and I know it. The Krogan in that bar fight never got to finish the job, and neither did the people who built him.
