Leaked Mass Effect Universe Trailer Surfaces After BioWare Shutdown
A day after BioWare's closure killed the next Mass Effect game, an internal trailer leaked online, and a Bloomberg reporter says it's the real thing.
The trailer is real, or at least Jason Schreier says it is, and that's about as close to confirmation as anyone's getting right now. A clip labeled Mass Effect: Universe surfaced on Reddit less than a day after EA shut down BioWare and killed the studio's next Mass Effect project, and it has the voice work, the music cues, and the production polish of something that was a lot further along than the official line ever let on (funny how 'early in development' tends to mean 'inconvenient to finish' once the layoffs start).
The clip itself, per PC Gamer, runs close to two minutes and opens on an ex-military officer in an N7-style trenchcoat talking to an Asari at a bar, a scene Ars Technica says is framed as 'in-engine footage from our small team' built on 'pre-production assets.' The officer gripes about his old job putting out fires and pitches his new one as stopping them before they start, which is either sharp writing or the saddest bit of foreshadowing BioWare ever shipped.
What's actually confirmed here
A purported EA employee claimed on Reddit, as reported by PC Gamer, that a trailer for the new game had already been produced and that development was further along than widely assumed. Hours later the trailer itself appeared. Schreier then said on Bluesky, per PC Gamer, that the footage is genuine and that BioWare had been working on it right up until the studio's closure.
That's a journalist's claim and a leaked internal clip, not a press release. EA has not put out anything official confirming the trailer, its contents, or how close the game actually was to release, and Rock Paper Shotgun is explicit that the footage was meant for internal use only, meaning someone's job just got a lot more interesting. Treat the leak as reported, not as announced, until EA says a word.
The business behind the body count
RPS also flags the timing nobody should skip past: BioWare's closure lands only a couple of months after EA went private, acquired by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Jared Kushner's Affinity. The channel Ms 5000 Watts puts a number on the carnage, describing roughly 400 layoffs tied to the studio shutdown and the game's cancellation.
- A purported EA employee said a trailer existed before the leak surfaced
- The clip itself matches the visual and audio details multiple outlets independently checked
- Jason Schreier says BioWare worked on it up to closure, per his Bluesky post
- EA has issued no official statement on the trailer or the game's cancellation
Why this stings more than a typical leak
A scrapped game is routine. A scrapped game that looks finished enough to have a trailer, a voice cast, and a stated chunk of 'in-engine' footage is a different animal: that's not a pitch deck, that's a production pipeline someone shut off mid-run. Whoever greenlit the layoffs now owns the fact that the clearest evidence of the project's quality came out after the studio was already gone, not before anyone decided it wasn't worth finishing.
