GTA 6 Reveals Radio Stations, and Yes, You Can Walk and Listen

Rockstar has finally let the public sample GTA 6's radio lineup, and confirmed a feature fans have begged for since the PS2 era: music that follows you out of the car.

By Adam Voss

Rockstar Games has done something it rarely bothers to do this close to a launch: it let the public actually sample the thing, rather than merely describe it. A new website now streams portions of the in-game radio stations arriving with Grand Theft Auto VI, and buried in the announcement is a feature so overdue that one almost admires the restraint it took Rockstar not to mention it sooner.

That feature is the ability to listen on foot. For the first time in the series' history, Jason and Lucia can pair headphones to a smartphone and carry the radio, or an on-demand podcast, out of the vehicle entirely: into gunfights, into heists, into whatever quiet Leonida affords between them. It is the kind of detail that sounds trivial until you remember how many hours the previous games spent punishing you for stepping outside a car mid-song.

The Stations, So Far

Rockstar is calling this the widest radio selection the series has attempted, and the early lineup does not discourage the claim. Confirmed so far:

  • Cocoteo FM, Latin music hosted by Bad Bunny and RaiNao's characters, running bachata through reggaeton
  • Back Country Radio, country hosted by Morgan Wallen and Lana Del Rey, with Jeremy Dufrene voicing a recurring character
  • AfroBank FM, African music curated by Burna Boy and Palms Trax
  • The Chamber 106.6, metal hosted by Kerry King and Tom Araya
  • Flash FM, the returning Vice City pop institution, now fronted by Robyn and Alex Consani
  • Dirty South Classics, regional hip-hop hosted by Trick Daddy and Trina

The confirmed tracklist already runs from Black Sabbath to Charli xcx to DJ Khaled, which tells you Rockstar is still treating the soundtrack as a curated artifact rather than a playlist assembled by committee, a distinction the industry has largely forgotten how to make.

A Distraction, Possibly a Well-Timed One

Rockstar released this batch of detail, along with a few new screenshots, in the same window that roughly 25 minutes of new gameplay footage surfaced online, reportedly sourced from the leaker known as Cyberleek. Rockstar has not addressed that footage. One is free to decide for oneself whether a radio station reveal timed to the same afternoon is coincidence or stagecraft; I have my view, and it is not a generous one toward the leak's convenience as cover.

Separately, Rockstar confirmed in September that an album of original material is coming, with songs already attached to Travis Scott, Morgan Wallen, and Keith Richards among others, the full tracklist still withheld. Given how much Rockstar has chosen to show this month, do not be surprised if more of that album surfaces before November 19, when Grand Theft Auto VI arrives on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

For now, the lesson is a simple one: when a studio actually finishes the thing before it starts marketing the thing, you get a radio station roster worth arguing about instead of a roadmap worth forgetting.
