PS Plus October Lineup: Mafia, Horizon, and No Apologies
PlayStation Plus adds a proper crime saga, a returning post-apocalyptic frontier, and a fungal shooter this October, no roadmap required, no reorganization promised.
Sony announced its October additions to the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog on Wednesday, and what strikes you first is how little persuading the lineup requires. Mafia: The Old Country arrives day one on PS5, a third-person crime saga set in 1900s Sicily that trades the series' usual sprawl for something tighter: a stiletto blade, a lupara shotgun, and a protagonist named Enzo Favara clawing his way into a Family that does not forgive half measures. It joins Horizon Forbidden West, returning to the catalog on PS5 and PS4 to remind anyone who skipped it the first time that Aloy's second outing remains one of the better-looking, better-built open worlds on the platform, machines and all. Mycopunk rounds out the day-one trio, a four-player co-op shooter about exterminating a planet's fungal infestation with an arsenal gleefully overstuffed with upgrades, the sort of thing that works precisely because nobody pretended it needed to be prestige to earn its place.
The broader October slate, confirmed across coverage including GameSpot and Polygon, fills out nicely from there: Poppy Playtime: Chapter 2 and The Midnight Walk cover the Halloween mood with factory horror and stop-motion dread respectively, the latter handcrafted in real clay and playable in PS VR2 for anyone who wants their nightmares in three dimensions. Tales of Arise returns in its Beyond the Dawn Edition, Monster Energy Supercross 25 brings its Unreal Engine 5 tracks along for the ride, and Premium subscribers get the actual treat: Dino Crisis 2 and RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 Complete Edition, two games from eras when a sequel did not need a live-service calendar to justify existing. Most of it goes live October 20, per the PlayStation Blog, with The Midnight Walk already playable and a few titles trickling in through the month's end.
There are HorrorFest trimmings too: a World War Z Halloween skin pack, a free Back 4 Blood expansion with steep discounts on the rest, a Dead by Daylight community pack tied to a match-count challenge, and a limited Sony Pictures Core discount on the Until Dawn film. None of it is the headline. The headline is that this is, once again, a service built around games people will still be talking about in a year, which is more than can be said for a certain other subscription that spent this same week being covered here as mostly a mirage. You were promised reinvention over there. Here, you are simply handed Sicily, the Forbidden West, and a mushroom apocalypse, and told to pick one.
