Pikmin 4's Switch 2 Edition Arrives Nov 12, Demo First

Nintendo is selling you Pikmin 4 again, this time with a dog-training mode and a new coat of Switch 2 paint. A free demo lands a day early.

Nintendo has set November 12 as the release date for Pikmin 4 - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, and a free demo arrives a day earlier, according to Eurogamer. The headline addition is Dandori Academy, a scored challenge mode built around three difficulty tiers of what Nintendo calls Dandori Exams, the hardest of which throws an Empress Bulblax at players chasing the best completion times.

Nintendo of America previewed the mode through its Treehouse staff, who ran the exams on camera and leaned on Oatchi, the game's dog companion, to hit top scores, as laid out in the channel's own description on the Nintendo of America video. The footage reads as exactly what a Treehouse segment is built to do: demonstrate mechanics, bank goodwill, sell the mode before anyone has played it themselves.

The pitch is competence under a stopwatch, which is a fair description of what Pikmin has always asked of players. What is new is the wrapper. Pikmin 4 already exists; the Switch 2 Edition is the same game plus a bundled minigame, timed to a console that still needs reasons for existing owners of the original to feel like upgrading bought them something. That is not a complaint about Dandori Academy itself, which sounds like a reasonably inventive use of a mechanic the game already had. It is an observation about the shelf it is sitting on. This site has already tracked the bumps in that rollout elsewhere, including the refunds Walmart issued after cancelling Zelda Switch 2 console preorders, which suggests the hardware transition has been less frictionless on the retail side than a Treehouse stream lets on.

None of that changes what ships on the 12th: a demo first, then the full edition, then presumably a queue of other catalog titles getting the same Switch 2 treatment in the months ahead. Pikmin fans get a new way to chase a leaderboard. Nintendo gets another reason for a Switch 2 owner to open their wallet for a game they may already have finished once.
