OG Xbox Achievement Glitch Shows Up Before the Real Thing

Players are screenshotting achievements for ancient Xbox games months before Microsoft was supposed to flip the switch, and the zeros everywhere suggest nobody meant for this to happen yet.

By Josh Brandt

Microsoft told us back in July that original Xbox games were finally getting achievements on modern hardware. Great news, long overdue, the kind of thing backward compatibility nerds have been begging for since the 360 days. What nobody promised was a date, and yet here we are with screenshots already circulating.

X users @xgramiliki and @PiquenoLoredo, via @CentralXBOX_, posted photos showing achievement lists populating for games like Destroy All Humans!, Full Spectrum Warrior, Star Wars: Republic Commando, Panzer Dragoon Orta, and The King of Fighters: Neowave. Open any of those games right now and there's a brand new achievements tab sitting where there used to be nothing.

Except every single one of them reads 0/0, with zero Gamerscore attached. That's not a soft launch. That's a shelf going up before anyone stocked it.

A glitch wearing a feature's clothes

The likeliest explanation is the boring one: a backend flag flipped early, probably by accident, and showed players the skeleton of a system that isn't done cooking. Expect Microsoft to notice, yank it, and quietly bring it back once the achievements actually have numbers attached. That's not a leak breaking a surprise. That's a construction site with the tarp blown off for an afternoon.

This is worth separating from the OG Xbox titles that already have working achievements today, like BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live & Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy. Those shipped the real thing. What showed up this week is the plumbing before the water's turned on.

Don't expect credit for old playthroughs

Even when this rolls out properly, Xbox vice president Jason Ronald has already confirmed the achievements won't unlock retroactively. However many hours you sank into Republic Commando back when it was new, none of that counts. You'll be replaying these games from scratch to see any Gamerscore move, which is either a nice excuse to revisit a disc you haven't touched in twenty years or a mild insult depending on your mood that day.

It does line up nicely with the Mythic Achievement system Microsoft rolled out for completionists chasing full clears, giving hunters a fresh pile of ancient games to pick apart once the feature actually works. Windows Central flagged the early sighting, and Plume Gaming's channel covered the same story, timestamped in its own roundup of Xbox news, without adding anything Microsoft has confirmed on the record.

No official word from Microsoft yet on when this actually ships for real. Until that word shows up, what you're looking at is a glitch that spoiled its own surprise, not a launch. Call it done when the Gamerscore actually moves.
