Nintendo Won't Promise GTA 6 for Switch 2, and That Says Enough

Grand Theft Auto 6 is a month out on PS5 and Xbox, and Nintendo's own boss isn't giving Switch 2 owners much to hope for.

Nintendo Won't Promise GTA 6 for Switch 2, and That Says Enough

Grand Theft Auto 6 drops November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. That much has been locked in for a while. PC owners already know the drill: Rockstar makes you wait, sometimes for years, sometimes it feels like forever. Switch 2 owners have been asking a simpler question, whether their shiny new box with its beefed-up chip might actually be able to run the thing. According to Polygon, Nintendo of America's own leadership has now weighed in, and the update is not the one anyone hoping for a Switch 2 port wanted to hear.

I get why people kept this hope alive. Switch 2 is a real jump over the original, strong enough to make ports of recent big releases plausible in a way they never were before. But "more powerful than the last one" and "can run the biggest open-world game Rockstar has ever built" are two very different bars, and Nintendo's own comments, as Polygon reports them, land closer to the second one being out of reach for now.

Nobody's pretending this is a done deal either way. Rockstar hasn't announced a Switch 2 version, Nintendo hasn't ruled one out in so many words, and nothing here is a hardware reveal or a release date. What it is, per Polygon, is a cold shower for the fans who'd built a whole timeline in their head where Switch 2 gets its own Los Santos sometime next year. That timeline just got a lot shakier.

This is the same story every generation. A console launches strong, a system-seller rumor attaches itself to it, and then the actual platform holder says something careful and noncommittal that everyone reads as a soft no. Nintendo doesn't owe Rockstar's biggest release a home just because the hardware sold well. And Rockstar, for its part, has never been in a hurry to chase every screen in the house.

If Switch 2 ever gets Grand Theft Auto 6, it'll show up as an actual announcement with a date on it, not a hopeful inference from a quote in an interview. Until Rockstar or Nintendo puts that on a screen, treat the dream port exactly like every other rumor that outlives the console cycle that birthed it: nice to think about, not worth planning a purchase around.
