GTA 6 Cops Can Now Sic Dogs on You Mid-Chase
A new preview confirms GTA 6's police will send a German Shepherd after you when you run, and developers reportedly begged the demo player not to shoot it.
Rockstar's cops don't just chase you anymore. They call in backup with teeth. A new preview from Edge Magazine, with Rockstar's Rob Nelson at the controller, confirms that GTA 6 police can dispatch a K9 unit when you bolt on foot, and the dog is not there for show.
In the sequence Edge describes, Jason and Lucia wipe out on a motorcycle trying to lose the cops and make a run for it. Nearby officers send out a German Shepherd, which runs Jason down and pins him before he gets anywhere. The detail that actually stuck with me: developers watching the demo reportedly told Nelson not to shoot the dog. That's not a throwaway line. It means the option is sitting right there, the same way GTA 5 let you gun down police dogs if you were cold enough to do it. Rockstar didn't confirm you can shoot this one. The warning did that job for them.
It fits the rest of what's been confirmed about how cops work this time. A six-star wanted system, a criminal profile that casts a wider net than GTA 5 ever did, CCTV footage you can destroy if you're spotted on camera, and officers who actually remember what Jason and Lucia were wearing when they ran. Translate that into what it means at the controller: changing your shirt might be the difference between walking away clean and getting chased across the map by a cop who clocked your jacket three blocks back. That's a meaningfully smarter manhunt than the last game ever bothered with, even before the dog shows up.
There's a lighter side to the canine theme too. The newest episode of South Park slipped in fresh GTA 6 gameplay footage of Jason flinging dog poop at someone, then picking it back up to do it again, because apparently Rockstar's sense of humor hasn't matured past age twelve, and thank God for that. And in a detail that's almost too on the nose, Miami, the real city Vice City is built on, just welcomed a new K9 officer named Samson. Also a German Shepherd. Life keeps copying the open-world checklist.
None of this changes the calendar. GTA 6 still lands November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with GTA 6 Online and a PC version reportedly waiting until early 2027. A smarter dog doesn't make the wait shorter. It just means when the game finally shows up, running from the cops is going to cost you more than it used to, and I'd rather find that out myself than read about it in one more preview.
