GTA 6 Review Timing: History Says Don't Expect a Long Wait

Rockstar hasn't said when GTA 6 reviews go live, but a new report and two console generations of precedent point to one familiar window before November 19.

GTA 6 Review Timing: History Says Don't Expect a Long Wait

Score one for patience, because nobody gets to read a GTA 6 review early no matter which console sits under the TV. That's the one true thing I'll hand over before I start grinding my axe: this release window is shaping up to be fair to everybody, PlayStation and Xbox alike, and I'd rather admit that now than pretend otherwise later.

According to Insider Gaming, reviews for GTA 6 will go live sometime before the November 19 launch date, though the exact day hasn't been locked down. That's not an official Rockstar announcement, so treat it as a confident guess rather than a release schedule carved in stone.

What History Actually Shows

Rockstar has a pattern here, and it's a short one. GTA 5 launched September 17, 2013, and its reviews went live the day before, on September 16. Red Dead Redemption II followed the same script in 2018, with reviews landing one day ahead of release. Two games, two embargoes, same twenty-four-hour window.

That's a real trend, but it's also a sample size of two, and GTA 6 is not a normal release by any measure. The game is reportedly on pace to pull in two billion dollars in revenue before it even launches, and it's being talked about as the biggest game of the year or possibly ever. A launch with that much riding on it might get Rockstar to rethink the playbook, hold reviews later, or surprise everybody and go earlier. Nothing is confirmed.

Same Game, Same Day, No Exclusive Bragging Rights

Here's the part that actually stings a little: GTA 6 lands on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on the same day, with the same review window, whenever that window turns out to be. Xbox doesn't get to claim this one as a system seller, because it isn't one, it's just the console that happens to be in the room when the biggest game in the industry shows up. I'll give credit where it's earned: nobody's getting a head start on the hype this time, and that's as close to a level field as this rivalry ever gets.

What's Xbox's move once reviews actually land? Watch.

The run-up has been relentless lately, with reports on everything from the game's original bigger scope to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick addressing the delay, plus corrections on that inflated $1.5 billion budget figure and Rockstar's own account of an NPC-focused studio built just for this project. Fans have been building their own GTA 6 map theories for months, as covered in our earlier look at the speculation, which tells you plenty about how starved everyone is for anything concrete. Reviews, whenever they drop, will be the first real signal that cuts through all of it. Until then, November 19 stands, barring another delay, and I'll be refreshing review aggregators right alongside everyone else, regardless of which controller is in their hands.
