GTA 6's Box Has No Disc, But You Can Still Get a Map

Rockstar is handing out a printable Leonida map and poster for free, with a physical version for 99 cents. The actual game box, though, just holds a download code.

Rockstar just confirmed what Grand Theft Auto 6 buyers are actually getting for their money on November 19, and it's less than you remember from the last few decades of this series. No disc. No fold-out poster taped inside the case. Just a code that tells your console to go fetch about 212GB off the internet, because apparently that's what a modern game release looks like now.

To its credit, Rockstar isn't pretending the old ritual doesn't matter. The studio will put a printable poster and a map of Leonida up on GTA 6's official website for free the day the game unlocks. If you want the real paper version, a double-sized physical poster goes up for sale through the Rockstar Store "shortly after launch" for 99 cents, or free if you're already buying something else from the store. That's the whole physical experience this time: a download code in a box, and a poster you either print yourself or pay less than a dollar to own.

The timeline around all this is getting firmer too. Preloading opens at 9pm PST on November 9th, and the game actually unlocks at 9pm PST on November 18th, which, as covered on IGN's Daily Fix, lines up with earlier reporting that US players will be among the last in the world to get in. Install sizes will likely differ a bit between PS5 and Xbox versions, but 212GB is the number Rockstar is putting out there, so start clearing space now instead of panicking about it on launch night.

There's also a rumor floating around that Walmart orders will come with some kind of unspecified "surprise," the way some Switch 2 orders there came bundled with snacks. Nobody's confirmed what that surprise actually is, or whether it's real beyond one report, so treat it as a maybe until a box shows up with something extra in it.

A printable map is a nice gesture. It is also a pretty clear admission that the thing it's replacing, an actual object you held in your hands when you bought a game, isn't coming back. Rockstar knows people miss it enough to recreate a cheap version of it. That's not nothing, but it's not the same as finding a glossy map folded into the case either. Print the free one, skip the 99 cents if you want, and save your actual excitement for November 19, when there's finally a game attached to all this packaging talk.
