GTA 6 Sales Split Shows PS5 Crushing Xbox, As Expected

Sensor Tower's latest unofficial tracker has GTA 6 past 7.7 million units sold, with PS5 taking nearly three of every four copies before the game has even launched.

GTA 6 Sales Split Shows PS5 Crushing Xbox, As Expected

Nobody who has watched this console generation unfold needed a spreadsheet to guess which way this would break, and now there is a spreadsheet anyway: Sensor Tower's updated tracker, reported by GameSpot, puts GTA 6 at roughly 7.71 million total pre-purchases, worth about $751 million in gross revenue, with weeks still to go before anyone legally plays it.

The platform breakdown is the part worth sitting with. PS5 accounts for 5.74 million of those units against 1.97 million on Xbox Series X|S, a 74 to 26 split that translates to $559 million in PS5 revenue versus $192 million on Xbox. Sony and Microsoft each keep roughly 30 percent of that through platform fees, so the imbalance is not merely a vanity metric for whichever console you prefer; it is a direct, measurable transfer of real money, and one side is collecting considerably more of it.

A Gap That Tracks the Hardware

None of this arrives out of nowhere. The split mirrors console market share rather than inverting it, which is the least surprising outcome available. Sensor Tower is now projecting as many as 25 million total pre-purchases by launch, and if the current ratio holds, that works out to something like 18.5 million units on PS5 against 6.5 million on Xbox Series X|S.

Circana's purchase-intent figures only reinforce the picture: 29 percent of US console and PC gamers say they plan to buy GTA 6, the highest number that firm has ever recorded for any game. A commercial event of that size tends to be commercial everywhere, which makes the specific lopsidedness of the platform split all the more telling.

The Alligator in the Room

Sony holds the marketing rights to GTA 6 on PS5, which leaves Microsoft promoting a game it cannot formally claim, and Microsoft has responded by announcing a custom Xbox console built into an alligator enclosure. You may recall that same company recently describing GTA 6 as breaking records on Xbox, a claim that, read against 1.97 million units to Sony's 5.74 million, says less about the game's performance on that platform than about how low the bar for a press release has fallen.

What Actually Launches

  • GTA 6 arrives November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, unlocking at midnight local time in each region.
  • The install is about 212GB, with preloading opening more than a week ahead of launch.
  • Players in New Zealand will be first in the world to start; players in the US, thanks to time zones rather than Rockstar's choosing, will be among the last.

A launch this large will move hardware, accessories, and headlines in every direction at once, and consoles have never cost more than they do walking into it. None of that changes what the pre-launch numbers already show: given a choice, the audience has made one, and it was not close.
