God of War Laufey's Collector's Edition Skips the Game Itself
Sony's new Laufey collector's box ships a light-up Faye statue, oracle cards, and an art book, but the actual game will cost you extra on top of the £130 price tag.

Sony just handed its biggest God of War fans a gorgeous box and forgot to put the game inside it, and that's the kind of own-goal my own team doesn't get to shrug off.
Spotted on the UK PlayStation Direct store, the Laufey Collector's Edition is built around a light-up statue of Faye mid-fight while Phranque the Cube looks on, backed by a 51-card oracle deck and a small art book, all in display-ready packaging. It looks like exactly the kind of shelf piece a PlayStation faithful would camp out for. Then you hit the fine print: the game is sold separately, £130 gets you the box alone, and in the US you're apparently looking at another $70 on top just to actually play the thing you preordered merch for.
I'll give Sony this much, because the rules say I have to and because it's true: a merch-only box isn't some new low invented in San Mateo. Rockstar just ran the same play with its own $400 GTA 6 collector's edition, which also skips the actual disc, so PlayStation didn't pioneer selling fans an empty trophy case. That's the one thing I'll hand my own side without flinching this week.
But knowing the trick isn't new doesn't make it less annoying when your own platform runs it twice in a month, first with the digital deluxe edition quietly dropping physical media, and now with a collector's box that drops the game entirely. These sets exist to squeeze the fans who were always going to buy in anyway, and cutting the game out is just Sony trimming supply chain costs while handing you the bill for the privilege of displaying a statue you can't actually play alongside.
What's Xbox's next move here? Nothing.
That's not a jab I can even dress up, because Microsoft isn't making a franchise with the kind of collector's appeal that justifies a $130 statue box in the first place, so there's no rival play to call out. Credit where it's due, at least Xbox isn't out here selling you an empty case. Small comfort when the game I actually care about, Kratos heading back into the spotlight right after Laufey wraps, is the one thing none of these boxes bother to include.
The bigger story sitting next to this one is a Prime Video God of War series with Dave Bautista stepping in and reportedly bulking up for the role after Ryan Hurst's exit, and that's the kind of follow-up that'll actually get me to pay attention again. The statue box, though, is just Sony counting on its own fans to buy first and ask questions never, and I'd like my platform to stop testing that theory.
