Leaked Trailer For Canceled Mass Effect Sequel Surfaces

Days after EA shut down BioWare, a former developer posted footage from the scrapped next Mass Effect game, and outlets have now confirmed it's real.

EA closed BioWare this week, and almost immediately a trailer for the project the studio was building next showed up online. A former BioWare employee posted it to Reddit, and it's for what would have been Mass Effect 5, internally called Mass Effect Universe. Windows Central reports the leak surfaced a day after an EA employee mentioned in a Mass Effect subreddit thread that a trailer for the game had already been finished months before the shutdown.

That timing is the whole story here. A studio gets shuttered, and the footage its own employee says was ready months ago only reaches the public after the building is already closed. Nobody at EA put this out. A person who used to work there did, because apparently that was the only way it was ever going to see daylight.

What's actually in the footage

According to Windows Central's description of the clip, the trailer plays like a spy thriller rather than the space opera the series is known for. The breakdown includes:

  • The Mass Effect 5 teaser's protagonist infiltrating a nightclub to take down hidden criminals
  • A backstory montage covering travel across the galaxy, a romance subplot, and a meeting with an unnamed ancient alien species
  • Firefights built around biotic powers
  • A closing reveal that Liara T'Soni, aged up from her original trilogy appearance, is back in the cast

Eurogamer reports the footage has been confirmed genuine after early doubts it might be an AI fabrication, which tells you something about where trust in leaked footage sits these days. Reaction channels Side Scrollers Bits and Inside Games both picked the clip apart within hours, debating whether it still carries the tone of the original trilogy or leans closer to the misfire that was Mass Effect: Andromeda.

A trailer nobody asked for, from a studio that's already gone

Four outlets carrying the same leak within a day of each other tells you how fast this moved, not whether the project it shows was ever going to ship as pictured. Nothing here is an announcement. It's a cinematic that got made, got shelved, and only got loose because the people who worked on it had nothing left to lose by sharing it.

That's worth sitting with for a second. A fully realized trailer, aged-up fan favorite and all, existed inside BioWare for months while the outside world heard nothing. Whatever becomes of the Mass Effect name now sits with EA and whichever studio eventually gets handed the keys, and based on how this one got loose, I wouldn't bet on a straight answer from either anytime soon.
