FSR 4.1 Beta Drivers Are Live on All Three Xbox Ally Handhelds

Beta drivers for AMD's FSR 4.1 upscaling just showed up on Xbox Ally, Ally X, and Ally X20, and early testing already shows steadier frames with less flicker.

A Reddit user going by Sjknight413 beat Microsoft's own messaging to the punch, spotting beta drivers for AMD's FSR 4.1 already downloadable on Xbox Ally, Xbox Ally X, and Xbox Ally X20, as Windows Central reports. Microsoft had only just said FSR 4.1 was coming to current Xbox hardware, and here it is, sitting in a driver update instead of a press release.

Here's the plain version: FSR 4.1 renders the game at a lower resolution, then uses machine learning to fill in the detail, so the handheld spends less effort pushing pixels and more effort keeping the frame rate up. That's the whole pitch. It only matters if it actually looks clean doing it.

Early testers say it does. Retro Game Corps ran eight games through it, including Cyberpunk 2077, Ghost of Tsushima, and Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, and called the upscaling a real step up from what the Ally had before. GameTechPlanet put FSR 4 against the older FSR 3 in Stellar Blade and Space Marine 2 and found FSR 4 noticeably steadier, with less of the flickering that upscaling tends to leave behind in busy scenes.

Microsoft is reportedly rolling this out to handhelds first, with Xbox Series X and Series S expected to get it in the following weeks, though no firm date has been confirmed anywhere yet.

Free frame rate with no asterisk would be nice for once. If the console version slips the way Xbox updates tend to, that's one more promise handheld owners already cashed in while everyone else waits.
